Recent research findings: Fathers of daughters in Afghanistan are more committed to gender equality

Bayan News – A recent study shows that in the war-torn country of Afghanistan, there is widespread support for women’s human rights, and in this context, fathers of daughters are more committed to gender equality under Taliban rule.

This research was conducted by researchers at the “Human Security Lab” at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, and the results were published yesterday (July 17).

This research was carried out over the past three years, especially after the ban on girls’ education, and analyzed the responses of 26,000 participants.

A part of the research states: “While there is widespread support for women’s human rights in this war-torn country (Afghanistan), fathers with older daughters are among the Afghans who are more committed to women’s rights as a national priority.”

According to the findings of this study, fathers rated gender equality on a scale of one to five, and showed more agreement with the statement: “I believe that achieving human rights for women is one of the main priorities for the future of my country.”

Charlie Carpenter, the lead researcher of this study, added that the cooperation of men and women is important and vital for fundamental change in Afghanistan.

He said, “Men need to act on behalf of their own women and daughters to truly bring about change in their circumstances.”

This research is being published on the eve of the third anniversary of the Taliban’s return to power in Afghanistan.

Since coming to power, the Taliban have banned girls from education and women from working in government offices, while imposing severe social and political restrictions on women.
