Morocco: More than 45,000 illegal migrants to Europe prevented

Bayan News – The Moroccan Ministry of Interior has announced that over the past eight months, it has prevented the illegal immigration of more than 45,000 people.

In a statement released on Saturday (September 7), the ministry added: “In 2024, Morocco continues to face increasing migratory pressure as a direct result of the instability prevailing in the Sahel region and its uncontrolled borders.”

On the other hand, some Moroccan state media have reported that in 2023, over 75,000 people were also prevented from illegally migrating to Europe, representing a six percent increase compared to 2022.

The Moroccan state news agency stated that the Moroccan navy has rescued approximately 11,000 refugees at sea this year.

However, due to its proximity to Spain, Morocco is one of the migration routes for people from Africa to Europe. This North African country has long been a primary route for African refugees trying to reach Europe via the Mediterranean Sea.

Morocco and Spain have strengthened their cooperation in combating illegal immigration since 2022.
