Bayan News – The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) announced on Sunday, September 29, that Georgette Gagnon, the newly appointed political deputy of UNAMA, has arrived in Kabul.
According to UNAMA, Gagnon was appointed earlier this month by Antonio Guterres, the UN Secretary-General, as the new political deputy for UNAMA, and she arrived in Kabul on September 27 to begin her duties.
Based on the information provided by UNAMA, Gagnon has over 28 years of experience in supporting peacebuilding processes and leading strategic initiatives in human rights, humanitarian actions, and development in conflict and post-conflict settings.
Moreover, the new political deputy of UNAMA served as the head of human rights at the UN’s Kabul office from 2010 to 2015.
Gagnon begins her role in Kabul at a time when the Taliban’s interim government has recently enacted and implemented the law on the promotion of virtue and prevention of vice. This law has sparked widespread international reactions, particularly from the United Nations.
The law, consisting of 35 articles, imposes more restrictions on Afghan women and girls.
