Bayan News – A new report from the World Bank shows that Afghanistan remains among the 26 poorest countries in the world.
According to a Reuters report published on Monday, October 14, citing the World Bank, the majority of these countries are in Africa, including Afghanistan, Yemen, Ethiopia, Chad, and Congo.
Indermit Gill, Chief Economist at the World Bank, commented on the report: “When many international institutions simply retreated from the poorest countries, IDA (International Development Association) has been their lifeline.”
The World Bank report states that around 40% of the world’s poorest population lives in these countries.
The institution also noted that the annual income of families in poor countries is estimated at $1,145.
According to the data published in this report, since 2006, these countries have faced debt and are vulnerable to natural disasters.
The World Bank has described the current conditions in these poor countries as worse than during the COVID-19 pandemic.
This report was published a week ahead of the annual meeting of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund in Washington.
In the coming days, the International Development Association (IDA) will hold a major meeting in Washington, aiming to eradicate extreme poverty and raise $100 billion to support the world’s poorest countries.
The budget required by the International Development Association is provided every three years by World Bank member countries.
