UN Report: Women’s Global Achievements Are Disappearing

Bayan News – The United Nations has recently published a report on the status of women and girls and their involvement in peace processes worldwide.

According to the report, over 600 million women and girls globally are affected by conflict and violence.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres stated in the report that generational gains in women’s rights are on hold and that decades of progress are now vanishing.

He highlighted that advancements achieved by women over multiple generations are now at risk. Referring to the October 31, 2000 Security Council resolution that calls for equal participation of women in peace negotiations, Guterres noted that the world still falls short of this goal.

Guterres further pointed out that current data indicates the “transformative potential of women’s leadership and participation in the pursuit of peace” is weakening.

The report also details that the impact of war and conflict on women has increased by 50% compared to last year. Additionally, it reports that the number of women killed in armed conflicts in 2023 has doubled compared to the previous year.

According to the report, conflict-related sexual violence against women has exceeded 50%, and sexual violence against girls in conflicts has risen by 35%.

This UN report comes as Afghan women and girls are being deprived of their basic rights. The Taliban has barred Afghan women and girls from education, employment, sports, political participation, and freedom of movement.
