Another U.S. Veteran of Afghanistan Nominated as Trump’s Secretary of Defense

Bayan News – Donald Trump, the President-elect of the United States, has nominated Pete Hegseth, a U.S. Army veteran and Fox News host, as his Secretary of Defense in his cabinet.

According to U.S. media reports, Hegseth was deployed to Afghanistan in 2011 and 2012 with the U.S. National Guard and served for ten months at Camp Julien in Kabul.

This U.S. veteran, who graduated from Harvard and Princeton universities, has also served in Iraq and Guantanamo in addition to Afghanistan.

In 2019, during Donald Trump’s first presidential term, Hegseth urged the president to pardon veterans accused of war crimes.

According to published reports, following Hegseth’s efforts, Trump pardoned a former U.S. Army commando in the same year, who was due to stand trial for the killing of an Afghan suspect involved in a bombing.

However, U.S. media have described the nomination of Pete Hegseth as one of the most surprising choices by Trump.

Previously, Trump had also nominated another veteran with experience fighting the Taliban as his National Security Advisor.
