South Korean Parliament Votes to Impeach the President
Bayan News – The South Korean Parliament on Saturday (December 14) voted to impeach President Yoon Suk-yeol over his declaration of martial law.
International media reports indicate that out of 300 members of the South Korean Parliament, 202 voted in favor of impeaching the president, 85 opposed, three abstained, and eight votes were declared invalid.
According to reports, with the impeachment of Yoon Suk-yeol, he has been suspended from the presidency, and Prime Minister Han Duck-soo has taken over the administration of the country temporarily.
The Constitutional Court of South Korea now has 180 days to decide the fate of Yoon Suk-yeol.
If the court upholds his removal, Yoon will become the second South Korean president to be impeached and permanently removed from office. However, there is precedent for the court reinstating an impeached president.
In 2004, former President Roh Moo-hyun was impeached by Parliament for violating election laws and alleged poor governance. However, the Constitutional Court overturned the decision and reinstated him.
