National Resistance Council: Special Representative of the United Nations should be a neutral person

Bayan News – The National Resistance Council for the Salvation of Afghanistan has called on the United Nations in a statement to exercise greater care in appointing a special representative for Afghanistan, ensuring that the selected person is familiar with the situation and ongoing crisis in Afghanistan and pursues complete impartiality.

The council expressed hope in its statement last night (December 31) that the objectives outlined in the United Nations Security Council resolution would provide the groundwork for the establishment of a comprehensive legal system based on the will of the people, ensuring a just peace and stability.

According to the National Resistance Council for the Salvation of Afghanistan, in order to achieve the fundamental objectives of the United Nations Security Council resolution, increased coordination and effective mutual cooperation among the permanent members of the Security Council is crucial.

The council’s statement states that Afghanistan’s integration into the international community through a comprehensive government based on the principles of the rule of law is possible, and the National Resistance Council supports any inclusive political process that leads to a just peace and the establishment of a comprehensive and all-encompassing system based on the will of the people.

However, a few days ago, the United Nations Security Council adopted a resolution on Afghanistan, which stated that the United Nations should appoint a special representative for engaging with the Taliban.

The adoption of this resolution was met with strong opposition from the interim government in Kabul.

Officials from the current Kabul government stated that the appointment of a special representative is not necessary in the presence of UNAMA (United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan).
