Rina Amiri: Detention of Girls under the Pretext of Hijab Has Devastating Effects on Women and Families

Bayan News – Rina Amiri, the U.S. representative for women and human rights in Afghanistan, states based on reports that some girls who were detained and imprisoned due to their hijab have taken their own lives out of fear.

She wrote on the X platform this morning, Saturday, February 10th, that the Taliban’s actions under the guise of orders are demeaning and have a devastating impact on women and families.

Amiri further writes that those who want to speak out about these actions are at risk. “Hundreds of women and girls have been detained and subjected to harassment, abuse, and crippling punishments. According to reports, some individuals who faced a night in jail have resorted to self-harm and suicide out of fear,” she added.

The U.S. representative for women and human rights has called on the Taliban to put an end to these actions.

However, the detention of girls for not adhering to the hijab by Taliban officials has been confirmed.

Zabihullah Mujahid had previously stated to Afghan media that some girls were attempting to promote immodesty under the influence of external circles and that they were released from relevant areas after counseling and obtaining guarantees from their families.

This Taliban action has elicited widespread reactions on social media platforms.
