Swedish embassy in Baghdad set on fire
Bayan News – A group of supporters of Muqtada al-Sadr, the leader of Iraqi Shiites, stormed the Swedish embassy in Baghdad early this morning, Friday (July 20), and set fire to part of the embassy.
Iraqi media reported that despite the widespread presence of anti-riot police forces, Muqtada al-Sadr’s supporters entered the Swedish embassy and, after setting it on fire, left the premises.
So far, there has been no report on whether embassy staff were present during the attack.
Meanwhile, the Swedish Foreign Ministry said in a statement that its embassy staff in Baghdad are safe and criticized the Iraqi government for not ensuring the security of the diplomatic corps.
It is worth noting that this attack took place just as a rally was held in front of the Iraqi embassy in Stockholm, the capital of Sweden, to burn the Quran.
