Malaysian Prime Minister’s Request to the Islamic Emirate: Cancel Discriminatory Policies against Girls

Bayan News – Anwar Ibrahim, the Prime Minister and Minister of Finance of Malaysia, has called on the caretaker government in Kabul to cancel discriminatory policies against women and girls in light of the ban on girls’ education in Afghanistan.

In his speech at the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly, he stated that denying women and girls the right to education is a violation of Islamic teachings. He emphasized that his country is committed to the people-to-people relations with Afghanistan, and these relations will continue through humanitarian assistance. He added, “Malaysia is deeply concerned about the dire humanitarian situation in Afghanistan.”

Since the Taliban regained control of Afghanistan, girls above the sixth grade have been prevented from attending schools, and the gates of universities have been closed to girls as well.

Earlier, a delegation from the Organization of Islamic Cooperation had told the Taliban during a visit to Kabul that education is a duty for both men and women based on the consensus of Islamic scholars.

However, the ban on girls’ education above the sixth grade in Afghanistan has been in place for over two years, and during this time, international pressure on the caretaker government in Kabul has been exerted, but it has not yielded any results.

Although officials of the caretaker government in Kabul claim not to be opposed to girls’ education, they emphasize that the necessary conditions must be met to reopen girls’ schools.
