UN Security Council Votes on Guterres’ Request

Bayan News – The United Nations Security Council is voting today, Friday (December 8th), on Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’ request for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza.

In an unprecedented move, the UN Secretary-General, utilizing his authority under Article 99 of the UN Charter, called for the establishment of a permanent ceasefire in Gaza.

Article 99 of the UN Charter empowers the Secretary-General to draw the Security Council’s attention to any matter that may threaten international peace and security.

This is the first time that Article 99 has been activated since Guterres took office.

In a letter to the Security Council, Guterres added that the Israel-Gaza conflict may exacerbate existing threats to peace and international security.

The Israel-Hamas conflict has been escalating for over two months, becoming more intense and widespread with each passing day.

As a result of this war, thousands of non-combatants have been killed and injured.
