UNAMA: Journalists Must Be Protected
Bayan News – The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) states that the year 2023 has been deadly for journalists operating in conflict zones.
The organization announced in a message on Monday, January 9th, that the number of journalists killed in 2023 has nearly doubled compared to three years ago.
UNAMA considers attacks on journalists as attacks on freedom of expression and calls on countries to ensure the protection of journalists.
However, with the Taliban coming to power in Afghanistan, media freedom has been restricted, and journalists have faced increased pressure.
Some international organizations have reported that in 2023, at least two journalists lost their lives in Afghanistan.
On the other hand, UNAMA’s reference seemingly includes journalists who were killed in the conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.
According to international media reports, over 60 journalists and media personnel have been killed in the Israel-Hamas conflict, which is unprecedented in its nature.
