Letter from Afghan Women to Guterres: Women Should Have a Meaningful Presence at the Doha Conference

Bayan News – A group of Afghan women known as the “Women, Peace, and Security Working Group” has sent a letter to António Guterres, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, urging him to ensure that women have a meaningful presence at the Doha conference.

The letter from Afghan women was presented to the UN Secretary-General on Friday (February 8th), stating that respect for women’s rights in Afghanistan should be at the forefront of discussions at the second Doha conference.

The letter from Afghan women, supported by ten women’s rights organizations, calls on the UN Secretary-General to make efforts to remove the barriers for women and girls and to secure the release of imprisoned women.

The letter emphasizes that the Doha conference presents an important opportunity for the United Nations, the Security Council, and the global community.

According to them, women’s rights in Afghanistan are not negotiable.

On the other hand, the United Nations has announced that relevant teams are working with the participants’ list of women’s rights defenders and human rights activists at the Doha conference.

The second Doha conference, hosted by the United Nations, will take place on the 18th and 19th of this month, with the participation of special representatives from countries for Afghanistan.

Representatives of the Taliban government have also been invited to this conference.
