UN Calls on the Taliban: Release Detained Women

Bayan News – Stéphane Dujarric, the spokesperson for the United Nations Secretary-General, says that the organization has urged Taliban authorities to release women who have been detained.

In response to reporters’ questions, he added that UNAMA (United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan) is concerned about the continued restrictions imposed by the Taliban on women and girls in Afghanistan.

There is fear that the continuation of these restrictions will further marginalize women and increase instances of domestic violence.

Reports indicate that the imposition of restrictions on women has resulted in issues such as early marriages, forced migration, and other social problems.

However, the Taliban interim government considers the matter of Afghan women and girls to be an internal affair and has requested international organizations and countries not to intervene in these matters.

Meanwhile, Rina Amiri, the United States Special Representative for Afghan Women’s Affairs and Human Rights, highlights that due to the ongoing Taliban restrictions on women, Afghanistan is facing a shortage of nurses, doctors, and a healthcare crisis.

Last night (February 12th), she wrote on the X platform in commemoration of International Day of Women and Girls in Science, stating that Afghan women and girls have been deprived of contributing to their country in professions such as doctors, engineers, scientists, and other fields.
