UN Secretary-General: The unjust ban on the education and employment of women and girls in Afghanistan must be lifted

Bayan News – Antonio Guterres, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, in a message, deemed the Taliban’s prohibition on the education and schooling of girls as unjust and called on them to lift this ban.

Guterres wrote on the X platform early this Wednesday (February 20th), “The unjust prohibition on girls’ access to education and the ban on women’s employment in Afghanistan must be lifted.”

He further stated that women and girls in Afghanistan should be able to fully and meaningfully participate in all aspects of Afghan life, from the field of education to decision-making tables.

These remarks come as the Doha conference concluded in the past two days without the presence of Taliban representatives. During this conference, emphasis was placed on safeguarding the human rights values of the Afghan people, establishing an inclusive government, and ensuring the rights of women and girls.

On the other hand, the UN Secretary-General stressed that Afghanistan, under Taliban rule, has made significant achievements in the areas of security, combating corruption, and preventing drug cultivation, but more work is needed.

Guterres called on the international community to continue their efforts for Afghanistan to ensure the rights of all citizens of this country and for this issue to be among the priorities of the current Afghan government.
