The World Food Programme (WFP) Announces a £40 Million Contribution from the United Kingdom to Afghanistan
Bayan News – The World Food Programme (WFP) has announced that the UK government has contributed £40 million, the equivalent of $50 million, to Afghanistan.
Hsiao Wen Lee, the WFP’s Country Director in Afghanistan, expressed that the World Food Programme is often the last lifeline for women and families in Afghanistan.
Lee stated, “With the support of partners like the UK, the World Food Programme can reach some of the most vulnerable, but more importantly, continue building a more resilient and secure food future for rural communities.”
According to Lee, this funding can provide emergency food assistance to over 1.2 million people.
Simultaneously, Hamish Falconer, the UK Minister for the Middle East and North Africa, added, “The UK is committed to supporting the people of Afghanistan, and this new financial contribution to the World Food Programme will help provide vital food and nutrition assistance to over one million people.”
However, according to WFP statistics, assistance was provided to 18.6 million people, including 9.4 million women and girls, in Afghanistan in 2023.
