The Center for Journalists in Afghanistan reacted to the Taliban’s Law of Promotion of Virtue

Bayan News – The Center for Journalists in Afghanistan issued a statement on Monday (August 26) in response to the ratification of the Taliban’s Law of Promotion of Virtue, stating that this law will intensify restrictions on media and journalists.

In the statement from this journalistic entity, it is mentioned: “This law includes explicit and ambiguous restrictions that could affect the work of media and journalists, specifically female journalists.”

According to the statement from the Center for Journalists in Afghanistan, during the past three years of Taliban rule, at least 17 directives related to journalists and media have been issued that severely restrict the freedom of the media and journalists.

This center also pointed to other issues such as prohibiting the misuse of recording devices, radios, the broadcasting of women’s voices from home, and the wearing of ties, stating that the content of these matters is also ambiguous, but penalties have been established for them.

The organization added: “The new restrictions are a continuation of the process of suppressing free media that began with the Taliban’s return to power in Asad 1400, and since then have been communicated and implemented to media and journalists in the form of verbal and written directives. These restrictions contradict and are at odds with the country’s media law, which the Taliban government has also accepted but only uses selectively in part.”

The Center for Journalists in Afghanistan has also urged the Taliban to reconsider their behavior towards media and journalists and to allow journalists to exercise their rights in accordance with the law.

The Taliban’s Law of Promotion of Virtue, which was ratified last week and published in the official gazette, has generated widespread national and international reactions.
