UN: We will continue our engagement with the Taliban

Bayan News – Stéphane Dujarric, spokesperson for the United Nations, has stated in response to the remarks from the Taliban’s Minister of Vice and Virtue that the UN will continue its engagement with the caretaker government in Kabul.

The UN spokesperson made these comments on Friday (August 30) during a press conference in New York.

Khalid Hanafi, the Taliban’s Minister of Vice and Virtue, explicitly announced two days ago that due to UNAMA’s criticism of the laws from this ministry, he is no longer prepared to cooperate with the agency.

In response to these remarks, a UN official, who supports human rights in Afghanistan under Taliban control, added: “I think we have been very clear about the decision to further diminish the presence of women in Afghanistan.”

According to the UN spokesperson, the organization will continue its work in the country based on a mandate from the Security Council.

This UN official clarified: “We have always carried out this work following the Security Council’s mandate, and I say that we are supporting the norms of the UN in an impartial and good-faith manner while promoting messages of human rights and equality.”

He has once again urged the Taliban to open more avenues for diplomatic engagement with the international community.
