Anniversary of the assassination of Ahmad Shah Masoud; Karzai: He constantly fought for the freedom of his homeland

Bayan News – Several prominent political figures in Afghanistan, including Hamid Karzai and Dr. Abdullah Abdullah, issued statements on Sunday (September 8) to mark the twenty-third anniversary of the assassination of Ahmad Shah Masoud, one of the commanders of the Afghan jihad.

Today marks the twenty-third anniversary of the assassination of Ahmad Shah Masoud. On this day, he was assassinated in Takhar in northern Afghanistan by two foreign attackers who posed as journalists.

Hamid Karzai, the former President of Afghanistan, stated on this occasion that he was a patriotic Afghan who consistently fought for the freedom of Afghanistan.

The former president wrote in his message: “Masoud’s fighting style, his constant presence among the people, and his ability to mobilize them made him a prominent figure in the Afghan jihad.”

Meanwhile, Dr. Abdullah Abdullah, the head of the former government’s High Council for National Reconciliation, also mentioned in a message that Masoud’s name is recorded in the contemporary history of Afghanistan alongside his achievements and political-military struggles as a steadfast, moderate man who was free from fanaticism, hatred, and violence.

Mr. Abdullah wrote in his message that Masoud had a deep understanding of the ethnic and religious diversity of the Afghan people and always sought to unite people around national and popular interests.

It is worth noting that the former government of Afghanistan declared September 18 as a public holiday in honor of the anniversary of Ahmad Shah Masoud’s assassination, but the Taliban removed this holiday three years ago.
