Biden Administration Calls the Agreement Between the Taliban and the U.S. “Defective”

Bayan News – The U.S. Department of State issued a statement on Monday night (September 9) in response to a report from the House Foreign Affairs Committee, describing the Doha agreement as defective.

The statement from the State Department references the chaotic withdrawal of the United States from Afghanistan and notes that this agreement disrupted U.S. efforts to end the war through negotiations among Afghans.

According to the State Department, General Kenneth McKenzie, former commander of the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), stated that the signing of the Doha agreement had a detrimental impact on the Afghan government and military.

The statement indicates that after the signing of the Doha agreement, the Biden administration faced a Taliban that was more powerful than ever.

It reads: “As part of this agreement, the U.S. forced the former Afghan government to release five thousand Taliban prisoners, including several senior commanders of the group. As a result, the Taliban achieved their strongest position in the last 20 years.”

The Department believes that ending “the longest war in U.S. history” was never easy, but President Biden made this “difficult and necessary” decision to conclude the 20-year conflict in Afghanistan.

The State Department noted that over the past three years, it has provided nearly 20,000 pages of documents to the House Foreign Affairs Committee regarding the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan.

In addition, the State Department has conducted nine high-level briefings for committees and members of Congress and made 15 senior officials available for transcribed interviews for staff and members of the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

According to the statement, Anthony Blinken, the U.S. Secretary of State, has also testified 14 times regarding the withdrawal from Afghanistan before Congressional committees.

However, U.S. Republicans continue to hold the Biden administration responsible for the “chaotic” exit from Afghanistan.
