Human Rights Watch: The World Has Not Taken Meaningful Action to Lift Taliban Restrictions
Bayan News – On the third anniversary of the ban on girls’ education in Afghanistan, Human Rights Watch criticized the international community for not putting enough pressure on the Taliban to lift restrictions against women and girls.
The human rights organization issued a statement on Tuesday (September 17) marking the third anniversary of the Taliban’s ban on girls’ education, stating that the global community needs to apply more pressure on the Taliban.
Human Rights Watch further stated: “The girls who were deprived of education during those years (the first Taliban regime) mostly never fully recovered, and the girls who are currently being denied schooling will face lifelong and intergenerational consequences.”
Human Rights Watch has called on the Taliban to provide safe and quality education for all girls.
The organization’s statement also said: “Donor countries should support communities that are advocating for girls’ right to education and should fund online and underground education initiatives led by women.”
However, in September 2021, just a month after the Taliban regained power in Afghanistan, they banned girls from attending schools.
According to published statistics, over the past three years, more than one million girls have been deprived of their right to education.
