EU: Every two hours, one mother in Afghanistan dies

Bayan News – The European Union, while announcing a €31 million aid package for Afghanistan, has stated that every two hours, a mother dies due to preventable complications related to reproductive and maternal health.

On Thursday, October 24, the EU announced the €31 million package for Afghanistan, stating in a declaration that €16 million will be allocated to the World Health Organization (WHO) and €15 million to the UN Population Fund (UNFPA) in Afghanistan to improve health services.

The statement noted that this aid will be used to improve the treatment of non-communicable diseases, including cancer, and to expand services in maternal health, neonatal care, child health, and adolescent health.

According to the EU, Afghanistan faces severe challenges in providing basic health services, especially for women, youth, and those living in remote areas.

The statement added, “Primary health services are available to only 10% of women. Maternal, infant, and neonatal mortality rates remain among the highest in the world.”

The EU also emphasized, “Every two hours, a mother dies due to preventable complications related to reproductive and maternal health, and 25% of Afghanistan’s population lives in hard-to-reach and underserved areas.”

The EU expressed concerns about the lack of national resources and the shortage of specialized personnel in health centers, stating that these challenges place further strain on Afghanistan’s fragile healthcare system.

To address these issues and improve access to better health services, the EU is working in collaboration with WHO and UNFPA.

This is one of several aid packages the EU has provided to the Afghan people over the past three years.

Previously, the EU also provided a €175 million aid package for Afghanistan.

However, since the Taliban took power in Afghanistan, international aid has drastically decreased, severely impacting the delivery of healthcare services across the country.
