Khalilzad to Saleh: You Knew Neither How to Fight Nor How to Govern
Bayan News – Zalmay Khalilzad, the former U.S. envoy for Afghanistan, recently stated that the leaders of the Republic neither knew how to fight against the Taliban nor how to govern.
Khalilzad made these remarks last night (October 29) on the platform X. His intended audience appears to be Amrullah Saleh, the former Vice President of Afghanistan.
On October 25, Saleh responded harshly, calling Khalilzad a “deceiver,” “liar,” and “fraud.”
In a lengthy note, the former Afghan official wrote, “Khalilzad and the U.S. Embassy were tasked with funding anti-Republic propaganda to mislead and confuse public opinion.”
Now, Khalilzad has responded that neither the U.S. nor he himself were the reason for the collapse of the Republic. “The Afghan government collapsed because its leaders were poor at fighting, poor at negotiating, and poor at governing.”
Without naming anyone specifically, the former U.S. official added, “The leaders of the Republic and their followers blame the U.S. and me personally for their loss of power.”
Khalilzad continued, “The Afghan Republic collapsed because, with few exceptions, its leaders were bad at governance, bad at negotiations, and bad at war.”
He emphasized that the former government leaders “wasted Afghanistan’s golden opportunity.”
