WFP Warns of Declining Groundwater Levels in Afghanistan
Bayan News – The World Food Programme (WFP) announced on Thursday (October 31) that the decreasing groundwater levels in Afghanistan pose a threat to its citizens.
The organization expressed deep concern about the declining groundwater levels in Afghanistan in a message on the platform X.
Previously, UNICEF had also warned that Afghanistan is facing a severe water scarcity crisis that needs urgent attention. The organization cautioned that if no preventive actions are taken, the groundwater in Kabul will be depleted by 2030.
UNICEF has attributed the drying up of Kabul’s groundwater to rapid urbanization and climate change. Afghanistan is one of the countries most affected by climate change, and reports indicate that approximately 80% of the Afghan population lacks access to adequate, safe drinking water.
