Reuters: The U.S. has asked Qatar that Hamas’s presence in Doha is no longer acceptable
Bayan News – According to Reuters, citing a senior U.S. official, the United States has informed Qatar that the presence of Hamas leaders in Doha is no longer acceptable.
According to the report, the Qatari government notified Hamas leaders ten days ago that they should leave Doha.
The U.S. official stated, “After repeatedly rejecting proposals for a hostage exchange, the leaders of this group should not be welcomed in the capitals of any U.S. allies. We made this position clear to Qatar after the latest rejection of a proposal for hostage release.”
The Reuters report also states that Washington is in negotiations with Qatar regarding the timing of closing Hamas’s political office, and after the latest rejection of a hostage release proposal, it has informed Doha that now is the time to take this step.
Three Hamas officials, in conversation with Reuters, denied that Qatar has informed Hamas leaders that they no longer have a place in the country.
Qatar, alongside the United States and Egypt, has played a significant role in several, so far unsuccessful, negotiations to establish a ceasefire in Gaza and release hostages held by Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
The latest round of talks in Doha in mid-October failed to reach a ceasefire agreement, with Hamas rejecting a proposal for a short-term truce.
