How serious is Trump about the trial of U.S. officers involved in the Afghanistan withdrawal?

Bayan News – In recent days, several U.S. media outlets have reported repeatedly that Donald Trump’s team is working on compiling a list of former and current U.S. military officers to be prosecuted for their involvement in the withdrawal from Afghanistan.

CNN recently reported that Trump’s team is considering whether it is possible to prosecute former and current military officers in a military court for their role in the decision-making process behind the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan.

An American source told the network that the president-elect has taken the matter very seriously and that a commission has been set up to gather information about who was directly involved in the withdrawal of U.S. forces from Afghanistan.

Meanwhile, it has been reported that Matt Flynn, former deputy assistant secretary of defense for counter-narcotics and global threats, is tasked with reviewing how the U.S. entered the war in Afghanistan and how the final withdrawal was carried out.

However, Matt Flynn’s lawyer, Mark Zaid, told NBC News that “Matt Flynn has no connection to Trump’s transition team and is in no way leading any review related to military justice matters.”

Zaid added in a statement: “No one has asked Mr. Flynn for his opinion on this hypothetical legal scenario.”

These reports come as Trump has strongly criticized the way the Biden administration handled the withdrawal of U.S. forces from Afghanistan during his election campaigns.

Trump has repeatedly referred to the withdrawal of U.S. forces as “humiliating” and “shameful” for the Biden administration. He has stated that, on his first day in office, he would fire the officials responsible for overseeing the withdrawal from Afghanistan.

On the other hand, an independent review conducted in 2022 by the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR) held both the Trump and Biden administrations responsible for the chaotic withdrawal of U.S. forces from Afghanistan.

Republicans have criticized the Biden administration for failing to properly prepare for the withdrawal, which was agreed upon by the Trump administration in a deal with the Taliban signed in Doha, and for executing the withdrawal hastily.
