UN: 49% of Returnees from Iran and Pakistan Are Women and Girls
Bayan News – The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has reported that over the past year, it has assisted 115,600 returnees from Iran and Pakistan.
In a report published on Thursday (November 28), the UN agency stated that approximately 49% of the returnees are women and girls.
The UNHCR also provided statistics indicating that about 74,300 of the returning refugees held temporary cards in Iran and Pakistan.
According to the agency, 2.5% of all individuals assisted are persons with disabilities.
The UN added that from September 15, 2023, to October 31, 2024, more than 758,000 Afghans have returned to Afghanistan from Pakistan.
The report further stated that 31% of returnees plan to resettle in large cities, including Kabul, Jalalabad, Kandahar, Kunduz, and Mazar-e-Sharif.
The agency also clarified that, on average, 23,000 people have returned to Afghanistan every two months this year.
This comes amid a backdrop of increasing forced expulsions of Afghan migrants by both Iran and Pakistan.
Recently, Pakistan’s Interior Minister warned that, starting this year, no Afghan will be allowed to remain illegally in the country.
