Karzai: The Interim Government Must “Immediately” Revoke the Ban on Girls’ Education in Medical Centers

Bayan News – Hamid Karzai, the former president of Afghanistan, has called on the interim government to immediately revoke its decision to ban girls from studying in medical centers.

On Wednesday, December 4, Karzai posted a message on his Facebook page, stating that Afghanistan can only overcome its dependence on foreign aid and resolve its internal challenges by having a skilled and educated workforce. This, he emphasized, is possible only if educational opportunities are provided for both boys and girls.

The former president remarked: “Hearing the news about the closure of medical institutes to girls, especially at a time when women and mothers across the country face numerous health challenges, is deeply saddening.”

He urged the interim government: “I reiterate that the only way to free ourselves from reliance on foreign aid and to drive our country’s growth and development in various dimensions is through education. Therefore, I call on the Islamic interim government to immediately revoke the decision to ban girls from medical institutes and, furthermore, to reopen schools and universities to them as soon as possible.”

This comes after the interim government unexpectedly announced two days ago the closure of all medical educational centers to girls, a decision that has sparked widespread national and international reactions.
