Merkel: Foreign Governments Failed in All Their Objectives in Afghanistan

Bayan News – Angela Merkel, the former German Chancellor, stated that foreign governments failed in nearly all their objectives in Afghanistan, including establishing the rule of law and addressing women’s rights issues.

On Thursday, December 5, Merkel testified before the German Bundestag’s investigative committee regarding Germany’s withdrawal from Afghanistan, emphasizing that Western allies in Afghanistan failed due to corruption and drug trafficking.

The former Chancellor asserted that Germany’s participation in the U.S.-led military intervention in Afghanistan was the right decision, even in hindsight.

According to Merkel, there was a legitimate hope that military intervention could prevent the planning of terrorist attacks from within Afghanistan.

German media reported that the Bundestag’s investigative committee is examining the decision-making processes and actions of the German government and intelligence services, including their interactions with foreign actors.

The committee is expected to present its final report before the end of this legislative term in February 2025.
