Iranian Official: Afghan Crossings Reduced by 50% with Implementation of Border Closure Plan
Bayan News – Amir Gholamalian, a ground forces commander in the Iranian military, stated that with the implementation of the border closure plan with Afghanistan, the movement of Afghans in the eastern regions of Iran has decreased by 50%.
Speaking to Iranian media on Tuesday (December 10), Gholamalian noted that approximately 35 kilometers of border wall construction has been completed, with the final phase set to be finished soon.
According to the Iranian military official, the border closure with Afghanistan has had a significant impact on controlling the border strip and regulating cross-border movements. Gholamalian said: “The statistics we had before the implementation of the closure plan indicated a very high presence of Afghan nationals along the border strip. Fortunately, this movement has now been reduced by half.”
He added that the plan’s execution is not limited to physical barriers but also incorporates advanced domestic technologies, including security walls, border sensors, watchtowers, and fiber optics for monitoring.
Gholamalian emphasized that upon completion of the project, “the movement of unauthorized groups or individuals” would be fully controlled. He expressed optimism that the implementation of this plan would enhance security and stability in the eastern border regions.
In the past two years, the Islamic Republic has intensified efforts to prevent the entry of illegal migrants into Iran.
Over the past year alone, nearly 700,000 undocumented Afghan migrants have been deported.
