Reporters Without Borders: Israel Has Turned Gaza Into a “Graveyard” for Journalists
Bayan News Agency – In its annual report, Reporters Without Borders (RSF) declared that Israel, through its attacks, has transformed Gaza into a graveyard for journalists.
The organization’s annual report, published on Thursday, December 12, stated that the number of journalists killed in war zones has reached its highest level in five years.
According to the report, since the beginning of the war between the Israeli army and Hamas in October 2023, 145 journalists have been killed in Gaza, with at least 35 of them likely targeted and killed deliberately.
The report noted: “Many of them were clearly identifiable as journalists and, therefore, should have been protected and granted immunity. However, they were directly targeted or killed in Israeli airstrikes.”
RSF accused Israel of “deliberately targeting journalists” and labeled these actions as blatant violations of international law. The organization stated that it has filed a complaint against Israel at the International Criminal Court (ICC) for war crimes.
The report also pointed out that, beyond the deaths of journalists in conflict zones like Gaza, other methods of obstructing journalism included cutting off communication channels and barring the presence of foreign reporters.
It added: “In 2024, Gaza became the most dangerous place in the world for journalists—a location where they themselves became targets of annihilation. One-third of the journalists killed in 2024 lost their lives during Israeli army bombings.”
RSF further claimed that Israel has become the third-largest jailer of journalists globally this year, detaining 41 journalists.
