U.S. State Department: We Engage with Kabul’s Interim Government for Our Own Interests
Bayan News – Matthew Miller, spokesperson for the U.S. State Department, has stated that Washington engages with Kabul’s interim government to advance its own interests.
Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, December 17, he added, “When it serves our interests, we are capable of engaging with terrorist groups.”
The State Department spokesperson further noted, “We engage with the Taliban to advance U.S. national interests, and we also maintain interactions with Hayat Tahrir al-Sham to further U.S. national interests, including finding and bringing journalist Austin Tice back home.”
This comes as U.S. officials have consistently called on the interim government to respect human rights and women’s rights and to take steps toward forming an inclusive government.
Meanwhile, despite such engagements, many Western countries have not recognized the interim government due to its disregard for women’s rights and other human rights issues emphasized by the international community.
