Turkish Foreign Minister Responds to Trump: The Will of the People Prevails in Syria
Polpress – Hakan Fidan, the Turkish Foreign Minister, responded to recent statements by Donald Trump, the U.S. President-elect, by stating that the will of the people currently prevails in Syria.
Three days ago, Trump remarked that Turkey had conducted a hostile takeover of Syria without significant casualties.
The U.S. President-elect further added, “Those who have gone to Syria are under Turkey’s control, and that’s fine.”
In response to these comments, the Turkish Foreign Minister clarified that it is incorrect to assume that Turkey will ultimately govern Syria.
Speaking to Al Jazeera on Wednesday, December 18, Fidan said, “We are not occupying it, as such an interpretation of what is happening in Syria is a major mistake.”
The Turkish Foreign Minister emphasized that what is happening in Syria does not signify the dominance of Turkey, Iran, or the Arabs, but rather highlights the necessary collaborations that must take place.
He stated, “We are learning great lessons from what is happening in our region, and I believe this is the last thing we want to see.”
These remarks come a week after the takeover by Islamist insurgents, during which intelligence officials from Qatar and Turkey visited Syria to meet and hold talks with the country’s rulers.
