Poverty and Winter: The World Food Program Can Only Assist Six Million People
Bayan News – Amid the worsening humanitarian crisis and increasing poverty in Afghanistan, the World Food Program (WFP) has announced that this winter it can only assist six million people.
On Tuesday (December 24), the WFP stated on the platform X that due to a lack of funds, millions of people across Afghanistan will be deprived of food aid.
The program further noted: “Winter in Afghanistan is ruthless.”
However, the UN agency had previously announced that it needs $718 million in funding to continue its operations in Afghanistan for the next six months.
According to the program, 15 million people in Afghanistan are unsure of where their next meal will come from.
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) had requested a budget of $3.06 billion this year to provide aid to the Afghan people. However, according to the latest UN reports, only 37.5% of this budget has been secured.
