Russian and Tajik Leaders Discuss Afghanistan Situation
Bayan News – Vladimir Putin, President of Russia, and Emomali Rahmon, President of Tajikistan, will meet on Wednesday (December 24) in Leningrad to discuss military cooperation and the situation in Afghanistan.
According to RIA Novosti, in addition to military issues and Afghanistan’s situation, the leaders of the two countries will also deliberate on migration, and the development of political, trade, economic, and cultural relations.
This meeting takes place as regional countries, including Tajikistan, express concerns about the movement of terrorist groups near their borders with Afghanistan.
Recently, the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) approved measures to protect Tajikistan’s borders with Afghanistan.
Additionally, Tajikistan will assume the chairmanship of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) in January 2025. Russia holds the chairmanship for 2024.
The Secretary-General of the CIS announced in November this year that the organization supports the proposal to establish a security belt around Afghanistan.
Sergey Lebedev expressed hope that this initiative would help reduce the activities of terrorist groups in the region.
