Report by Afghan Journalists Center: Interim Government Arrested Over 50 Journalists in 2024
Bayan News – The Afghan Journalists Center, in its annual report, revealed that the Interim Government arrested and imprisoned over 50 journalists on various charges in 2024.
The annual report, released on Thursday (December 26), also stated that 181 cases of media rights violations were recorded this year by the Taliban.
According to the report, 18 media outlets ceased operations this year due to the Interim Government’s policies and ongoing financial crises.
The Afghan Journalists Center emphasized that suppression of media freedom in the country has increased by 8% compared to the previous year.
The report noted that the enforcement of media laws remained ambiguous in 2024, and the Ministry of Information and Culture of the Interim Government, the primary body dealing with media, has been sidelined.
The Center added that the government had forwarded proposed amendments to the Public Media Law and the Access to Information Law for approval.
It further stated that the government’s “Promotion of Virtue” laws have imposed new restrictions on media, intensifying pressures.
According to the report, the government issued at least seven directives in 2024, compared to four directives in 2023.
Meanwhile, the Afghan Journalists Center had recorded over 168 incidents of media rights violations in 2023.
However, the Interim Government has declared the activities of the Afghan Journalists Center illegal.
