In 2024, more than 10,000 refugees have lost their lives on their way to Spain

Bayan News – International media have reported that in 2024, over 10,000 refugees died while attempting to reach Spain via maritime routes.

“Caminando,” a refugee rights advocacy organization in Spain, reported on Thursday, December 26, that the total number of refugee deaths has increased by 58% compared to 2023.

The organization stated that, on average, 30 refugees lose their lives daily on the maritime route to Spain. By December 15, over 10,000 deaths had occurred along the Atlantic Ocean route, recognized as one of the world’s most dangerous paths for refugees.

According to the organization, among the deceased were 1,538 children and 421 women. Most of the refugee drownings took place during April and May of this year.

In February, Spain committed $218 million to assist the United Kingdom in combating human trafficking.

The Spanish Ministry of the Interior reported that by December 15 of this year, over 57,500 refugees had reached Spain by boat, representing an increase of nearly 12% compared to the same period last year.
