The Interim Government Seeks Formal Diplomatic Relations with Syria

Bayan News – Amir Khan Muttaqi, the Foreign Minister of the Interim Government, in a phone call with Assad Shibani, the Foreign Minister of Syria’s Transitional Government, expressed a desire to establish formal diplomatic relations with Damascus.

Zia Ahmad Takal, Deputy Spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, announced on Friday night (December 27) about the phone conversation between Muttaqi and the Syrian Foreign Minister.

During the call, Muttaqi expressed hope that both parties could establish formal diplomatic relations.

According to the Deputy Spokesman, Muttaqi conveyed his best wishes for the success of the Transitional Government of Syria led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham.

Takal quoted the Syrian Transitional Government’s Foreign Minister as expressing optimism about strengthening relations between the two sides and facilitating meetings between delegations from both governments.

This marks the first official contact between a senior member of the Interim Government and a representative of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham since the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad’s regime and their subsequent dominance in Syria.

Previously, the Interim Government had congratulated and welcomed the control of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham and other insurgent groups over Syria.
