Bayan News – In a joint statement, the representatives of the 11 member countries of the United Nations Security Council condemned the restrictions imposed by the Taliban on women and girls.
The joint statement, released on Monday, February 26, demands that the Taliban revoke the policies and directives that oppress women and girls. It was issued and signed by representatives from Japan, France, Ecuador, Malta, South Korea, Sierra Leone, Slovenia, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Guyana.
They stated that peace, stability, and sustainable progress in Afghanistan can only be achieved through a comprehensive political process based on respect for the rule of law and human rights for all people, where the rights of women and girls are fully respected and the voices of all Afghans are heard.
According to the representatives of the 11 member countries of the Security Council, the role of women in conflict resolution, peacebuilding, and humanitarian responses is crucial, and equal participation of women in development, the economy, and political processes in Afghanistan is vital.
They emphasized the need for accountability in cases of human rights violations and actions against women and girls.
Meanwhile, the interim Taliban government has consistently regarded positions regarding women and girls in Afghanistan as interference in the country’s affairs.
Taliban officials have stated that the rights of women and girls are currently being ensured based on principles and Sharia law more than ever before.
