Khalilzad: The Return of Trump to the White House Provides an Opportunity for Full Implementation of the Doha Agreement

Bayan News Agency – Zalmay Khalilzad, former U.S. envoy for peace in Afghanistan, has stated that Trump’s return to the White House creates a favorable opportunity for the full implementation of the Doha Agreement.

Khalilzad made these remarks on Thursday evening, November 7, just a day after Trump’s victory in the U.S. presidential election.

Khalilzad had signed the Doha Agreement between the Taliban and the U.S. in February 2020 in Qatar during Trump’s previous presidency.

Meanwhile, the current interim government in Kabul has welcomed Trump’s victory in the U.S. presidential election and expressed a desire for a new chapter in its relationship with Washington.

Officials from Kabul’s interim government added that the Doha Agreement was a significant milestone in Afghanistan’s history achieved during Trump’s presidency.

Khalilzad has previously encouraged both the U.S. government and the Taliban to implement all aspects of the Doha Agreement.

Furthermore, Suhail Shaheen, head of the political office of Kabul’s interim government in Qatar, stated that with Trump’s victory, there is a possibility for improved relations between the United States and the Taliban.

Shaheen added that the Taliban hope to gain formal recognition during Trump’s presidency.
