Pressure from the German government on Afghanistan’s diplomatic missions; Either engage with the Taliban or step down
Bayan News – It has been reported that the Afghan consulate in Bonn, Germany, is being evacuated due to pressure from the host government regarding the presence of its staff.
In connection with this issue, Lutfulah Sadat, the Afghan Consul in Bonn, announced on Monday (November 18) that due to the restrictions and demands of the host country, he would be ending his tenure after two decades.
According to a statement from Mr. Sadat posted on the official website of the Afghan consulate in Bonn, he said: “In light of certain considerations and political restrictions of the host country, and at their request, in order to prevent the closure or suspension of the activities of this mission, I am stepping down from my position as the Consul General of Afghanistan in Bonn, Germany.”
German foreign ministry officials have not officially commented on the matter.
However, published reports indicate that the German government has asked diplomatic missions in the country to either engage with the Taliban or cease their operations.
According to reports, over the past two months, the ambassador and diplomats from the former Afghan government have discussed with German officials the continuation of their work at diplomatic missions, but the officials have stated that the presence of diplomats without relations with the current Kabul government is of no value.
This report comes as the Taliban’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs declared three months ago in a statement that the activities of Afghanistan’s diplomatic missions in 13 countries, including Germany, were no longer legitimate.
