Karzai Calls for a Regional Initiative on Afghanistan in Meeting with Iranian Ambassador

Bayan News – Hassan Kazemi Qomi, the ambassador and special envoy of the Iranian president, met with Hamid Karzai, former president of Afghanistan, on Wednesday, November 20, to discuss issues concerning the region.

The Iranian embassy in Kabul released a statement noting that Karzai expressed his gratitude for the Islamic Republic of Iran’s support for the people of Afghanistan.

The embassy further stated that Karzai called for greater attention from regional countries, particularly Iran, to Afghanistan’s situation and urged the proposal of a regional initiative aimed at addressing the problems facing the Afghan people.

Before this meeting, the Iranian president’s special envoy had also held discussions with senior Taliban officials, including Mullah Abdul Kabir, the Taliban’s deputy prime minister for political affairs.

Although Iran has not yet officially recognized the Taliban government, it has established close political and economic relations with them.
