Russian Diplomatic Official: It Is Premature to Discuss Recognizing the Taliban

Bayan News – Andrei Rudenko, Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister, recently stated that it is still too early for Moscow to formally recognize the Taliban government.

In an interview with TASS news agency, the Russian deputy minister clearly stated: “Regarding the topic of officially recognizing the current authorities in Afghanistan, it is premature to discuss it. Let us proceed gradually and step by step, but we do not intend to deliberately disrupt processes.”

The Russian diplomat emphasized that Moscow is taking steps to establish practical engagement with Afghanistan’s rulers on matters of mutual interest.

He also referred to the process of removing the Taliban from the list of banned organizations, affirming that this process will not be halted.

“The completion of the necessary legal process to remove the terrorist organization designation from the Taliban movement will serve as a positive signal for Russia-Afghanistan engagement, especially in economic areas,” the deputy minister added.

However, more than three years after the Taliban’s return to power, no country has officially recognized their government. Nonetheless, some regional nations, including Russia and China, have strengthened their diplomatic relations with the group.

Furthermore, the formation of an inclusive government, combating terrorism, and respecting human rights are among the conditions cited by some countries for recognizing the Taliban regime.
