Karzai’s Behind-the-Scenes Efforts for Intra-Afghan Dialogue
Bayan News – Hamid Karzai, the former president of Afghanistan, participated and gave a speech on Wednesday (November 27) at a closed-door meeting held in Germany.
Sources linked to Afghan media reported that the meeting, titled “Afghanistan at the Crossroads: 23 Years After the Bonn Conference,” was organized by the Academy of International Affairs of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany.
According to published reports, in addition to Karzai, Zalmay Rasool, Afghanistan’s ambassador to the United Kingdom, Rangin Dadfar Spanta, Hamid Siddiq, and several other political figures from Afghanistan and Germany attended the session.
In his speech, Karzai called the absence of representatives from all political factions at the 2001 Bonn conference a “historic mistake” and stated that this error hindered the fulfillment of the Afghan people’s aspirations.
The former president of Afghanistan emphasized the continuation of Afghanistan’s historical and friendly relations with Germany, noting that Germany could once again host dialogues between the Afghans.
He also reiterated the importance of national dialogue among Afghans, stressing that the people of Afghanistan should take the initiative for dialogue and reconciliation.
Hamid Karzai mentioned that during his presidency, he referred to the Taliban as “brothers,” and that he still considers the Taliban’s opponents as “brothers” today.
It is worth noting that the first Bonn conference, which was held at the Petersberg Hotel, did not invite representatives of the Taliban. The outcomes of the conference included the formation of a new government, holding an emergency Loya Jirga, presidential elections, drafting a new constitution, establishing a parliament, and the inclusion of women in the political structures of the system.
