Decker: Ban on Girls’ Education in Afghanistan Should Be Reversed to Prevent “Unnecessary Suffering”
Bayan News – Karen Decker, the U.S. chargé d’affaires for Afghanistan, stated that the interim government’s decision to ban women and girls from medical institutions is indefensible in any language, culture, or religion.
The American diplomat wrote on the platform X on Saturday night (December 7):“Kandahar had already endangered Afghanistan’s future by barring girls from becoming teachers or engineers, and now, by preventing them from becoming doctors or midwives, it is completely destroying their future.”
Decker further noted: “Babies will not be born. Mothers will die. All the people of Afghanistan will suffer. This decision must be reversed to prevent unnecessary suffering.”
According to Decker, understanding the interim government’s diplomacy in the global context is challenging, and this is what they are presenting to the international community.
This comes after the interim government last week shut down all medical institutions across Afghanistan for women and girls.
The unexpected move has triggered widespread negative reactions and international condemnation.
