Bayan News – The United Nations General Assembly has approved the resolution for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza with 153 countries voting in favor, 10 countries opposing, and 23 abstentions.
The General Assembly resolution was passed on Wednesday, December 12th. Last month, the United Nations had also adopted a resolution with the aim of establishing a ceasefire and providing humanitarian assistance to the Palestinian people.
Although these resolutions are not legally binding, it is said that they have weakened the position of the Israeli government internationally.
Before the voting, representatives of various countries addressed the General Assembly regarding the Gaza resolution, and among them, the Ambassador of the United States received particular attention from the attendees.
In the voting at the United Nations General Assembly regarding the approval of the resolution for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, the United States once again voiced its opposition.
The U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations stated that Washington seeks to facilitate a sustainable peace between Israel and Palestine and, at the same time, agrees with some of the provisions outlined in the resolution, including the worsening humanitarian situation for civilians in crisis.
Greenfield added in her statements, “We must strive to establish the foundations of a genuine and lasting peace, a peace in which Israelis and Palestinians can live side by side in their own country.”
However, President Joe Biden had stated before the voting on the resolution that Israel is losing global support.
