UNAMA calls for Taliban’s explanation of ‘Matiullah Wesa’ arrest

The Office of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Kabul (UNAMA) has asked kabul’s acting government to provide clarity on the detention of Matiullah wesa, a girls’ education activist.

Unama issued a statement on Tuesday (March 28) saying that Mr. Wesa, head of Rah-e Qalam and an advocate for girls’ education, was arrested in Kabul yesterday.

“UNAMA asks the ruling authorities to provide information on where he is and clarify the reasons for his arrest, as well as to ensure that he has access to the rights of his lawyerand is in contact with his family,” the statement said.

The acting kabul government has not yet commented on Mr. Wesa’s arrest.

After restrictions on education on women and girls were imposed, the head of Rah-e-Qalam expanded his protest activities in southern Afghanistan.

In order to promote education, Wesa established a mobile school and trained girls and women, while in meetings with tribal elders, she urged them to pressure the government to reopen girls’ schools.
