UNAMA: Taliban wants to force UN to make ‘terrible’ choices

The Office of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) said in a new statement that kabul’s acting governmentofficials want to persuade the United Nations to make a “terrible” choice between staying and providing services.

“Through this ban, the taliban’s ruling authorities seek to force the United Nations to make a terrible choice between staying and providing services in support of the Afghan people and adherence to the rules and principles that we are obliged to abide by,” UNAMA said in a statement on Tuesday.

The acting governor of Kabul has warned that any negative consequences of the crisis for the Afghan people will be the responsibility of the ruling authorities.

At the same time, UNAMA has announced the visit of Rosa Ottenbayeva, the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General until May 5th of this year. “At this juncture, Ms. Rosa Ottenbayeva, the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Afghanistan and head of the UNITED Nations AssertiveNess Mission in Afghanistan, has begun a period of operational review until May 5, 2023.”

According to UNAMA, the UNITED NATIONS will maintain a principled and constructive interaction at all possible levels with the Taliban’s ruling authorities, as ordered by the UN Security Council.

The United Nations Assertive Representative’s Office in Kabul has also ordered all employees not to attend UN offices, with the exception of limited to carrying out vital tasks.

Unama’s statement also stated: “The United Nations will continue to continue its essential and vital humanitarian activities in accordance with the humanitarian principles and standards outlined by the Interagency Permanent Committee in Geniva in 2022, during which we will assess all aspects and consequences of the ban and postpone our activities in cases of obstruction. He brought it.”
