Most Foreign Prisoners in Iran are Afghan Nationals
Bayan News – Iranian authorities have stated that approximately six thousand Afghans are imprisoned in the country’s prisons.
Ali Reza Mahmoodi, the Consular General of the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, told the media in Iran that Afghan nationals make up the majority of foreign prisoners.
However, this Iranian official has not provided any information regarding the crimes committed by these Afghan prisoners. Previously, dozens of Afghans had been detained in Iran on charges of drug trafficking.
Furthermore, the Iranian official stated that more than 900 Iranian citizens have been transferred to Iran from prisons in other countries.
It should be noted that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Interim Kabul Government had announced in late June the transfer of 1,131 prisoners from Iranian prisons to Afghanistan.
These prisoners have been transferred to Afghanistan based on a prisoner exchange agreement between the two countries’ justice ministries in 2006.
